Gray’s Papaya store has extended been a fixture right here on the corner of Broadway and 72nd Street. But I believe the "recession" emphasis is fairly new…

These are photographs that I started taking in mid-December of 2008, after the government helpfully informed us that the recession (a word they had dared not use prior to, just as they refuse to use the word "depression" now) has really been in impact since December 2007.
Possessing lived via roughly half a dozen prior recessions, with nothing but vague recollections to mark their existence, I believed it would be valuable to start off gathering some photographic memories of the recent one. It could or may not turn out to be as severe as the Fantastic Depression of the 1930’s, and it could or may not create the type of grim photographs that we have of that era … but we won’t genuinely know until finally it is over, and our 20-20 hindsight may be far better informed with some photos.
Thus far, I have only a couple of images of indications exhibiting steep reductions these are intriguing, but it is the "human story" that I think will inform the a lot more essential story. But I have also noticed an enhance in the amount of homeless men and women on the street, asking for money, foods, and handouts but I have no direct proof that it really is connected with the economic downturn itself. In any situation, I’m reluctant to take benefit of such people by taking casual pictures of them I am positive far more proper options will current themselves, and I’ll add them to the album as I discover them…
